In this case, Toyota claimed that a longer range (and therefore heavier battery) would reduce the car's gasoline-only efficiency too much to make the extra range worth it. I agree that having 50+ miles of EV range would be nice for commuting, but for longer trips I think having a reduced electric range is worth the fuel economy benefit.
