The Science Behind Procrastination

And How to Prevent It

Procrastination. We can all probably agree that each of us are guilty of it to some degree. Although some of us might struggle with it less than others, no matter who you are, there’s almost always a task that we push off until it’s the last item on our to-do list. So why do we do it? And more importantly, how can we stop doing it as often, or maybe at all?

Why We Procrastinate

To start with why we do it, there could be quite a few reasons why we can justify pushing tasks off. Maybe it’s because we’ve felt that we’ve done enough today. Or maybe it has to do with a lack of sleep and just feeling tired or unmotivated. But no matter how well we justify pushing things to the last minute possible, that doesn’t change what’s going on behind the scenes.

Every time we go on a social media platform, watch T.V, or play a video game, most likely you’re enjoying yourself (otherwise, you probably wouldn’t be doing it). Activities like these are enjoyable because of the dopamine our brains release.

Dopamine, in short, makes us more likely to do whatever activity we find enjoyable…
